Homegrown, Flamingo’s integrated production unit in Kenya, currently grows and exports over 600 million stems of cut flowers to Europe, Japan and the USA from farms located in Central, Western and Eastern Kenya.
Out of a total area available for cultivation of flowers of 2,000 hectares, 400 hectares of greenhouses are currently under production thus offering significant potential for expansion and geographical diversification.
Of the total production, roses comprise 55 percent, spray and standard carnations 26 percent, fillers and greens 11 percent, Longiflorum and Asiatic lilies 5 percent and the balance spray roses, alstromeria and freesias. Flowers are either exported as straightline product or assembled into mixed bouquets, all sleeved, priced and bar coded on site ready for the customers shelves.
After processing the flowers are transported by refrigerated trucks to Skytrain, a dedicated export hub located at Nairobi airport and loaded each night onto freighters bound for the UK and international markets.
Once in the UK, the flowers are delivered through the integrated cold chain to Flamingo Flowers production facilities in Bedfordshire and Lincolnshire for conditioning and quality control.
Computer-controlled stock and production management mean that the flexible production lines create over a million bouquets weekly, including direct mail bouquets ordered on-line.
Flamingo is proud to deliver the finest flowers and bouquets available to all of the major supermarkets each and every day.
